Hot-Mix Asphalt

Most Popular way to Pave

Asphalt pavement is known for its durability and resilience. It is this strength which makes asphalt pavement the best option for most all paved surfaces. Most state and federal governments highly prefer asphalt pavement because of its reliability and lasting life. If it is properly laid, it need not be replaced for twenty to twenty five years. Asphalt pavement is also the most popular choice for applications such as driveways, parking lots, roadways, airstrips and more.

Hot-Mix Asphalt Defined

Asphalt pavement refers to any paved road surfaced with asphalt. Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil. Asphalt cement is heated aggregate, combined, and mixed with the aggregate at an HMA facility.

The resulting Hot Mix Asphalt is loaded into trucks for transport to the paving site.  The trucks dump the Hot Mix Asphalt into hoppers located at the front of paving machines.  The asphalt is placed, and then compacted using a heavy roller, which is driven over the asphalt. Traffic is generally permitted on the pavement as soon as the pavement has cooled.

Final Thoughts

Asphalt is everywhere. Asphalt is also the most commonly recycled material in the United States—before paper or plastic! Approximately 80% of all asphalt pavement is recycled when it is removed. Without question, if you are looking for lasting pavement for these applications, and one that can be used over and over again, asphalt pavement is the best choice. For the initial construction and over the long haul, asphalt pavement saves money on construction and maintenance. That’s the conclusion of highway engineers and departments of transportation across the country. The “life-cycle costs”—money spent on road construction and maintenance over its lifetime—are significantly lower with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) than with concrete.

Benefits of asphalt pavement include:

  • Construction Time – Hot-mix Asphalt is an efficient process that only takes 1-2 days for the typical size project.
  • Superior Finish – Asphalt’s smooth surface makes for a better driving experience than other types of pavement.
  • Maintenance & Repair – Asphalt maintenance and repair is inexpensive due to the cost of the materials. Asphalt is also a flexible material which allows it expand and contract with the seasons better than materials like concrete.
  • Low Investment – Asphalt paving is typically 40-50% less expensive than concrete.

When you install asphalt pavement, you benefit from the superior qualities of asphalt for 20 to 25 years. While asphalt requires annual maintenance to maximize its lifespan, the investment is far less expensive than other pavement types.
